SCENES FROM THE DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE SEMINAR HELD ON THE 7/10/2009
The Autumn Seminars in a series of three under the title "Make your Own Identity" came to an end with the last one around Education Training and Apprenticeships.
The first one which took place on the 24th September 2009 concentrated around Violence and Crime and was a very well attended seminar with some very interesting information around youth gangs and the issue that carrying an offensive weapon is not the solution to self defence as those present were shown images of a teenager killed by the very weapon that she carried.
The YOS and the YEP with Paul Sutton from the MP and Sergeant Neil Standring respectively gave information as to the work carried by these services.
Superintendent Dave Osborn said the police are doing a lot of work in community and are engaged with the youth in Enfield educating them about the dangers of getting involved with gangs.
On the Drugs and Alcohol Abuse Lesley Johnson and Faye explained in detail the valuable work that is carried out in the community in Schools and Colleges and the the two former users gave shocking and moving revelations as to how they ended up being hooked on drugs for 15 years by just experimenting and gave an in-depth talk on the adventures and difficulties they faced and how they are today cured.
It was a very Educational and emotional seminar but sometimes these shocking revelations can help people appreciate the danger of getting involved with drugs.
The last Seminar for this year in these series was around Education Training and Apprenticeships.
A number of young people and in an audience of all ages heard experts on this field as to how young can get further training and education and how they can apply for Apprenticeships.
Joan Ryan M.P. gave a talk as to how much the government are doing to promote Apprenticeships on a national level with a variety of choices. Soula Christodoulou sixth form Assistant Director to Learning and gave in detail information the various projects Barnet is involved in and Neil's Rousell Joint Director of Children's Services London Borough of Enfield gave power point presentation on the stages from 14 to 19 what is expected of the students to achieve in as far as exams and grades are concerned and what route to follow to enable them to choose the right subject / s they will like to pursue.
John Burke gave a talk around the services provided by the Enfield Training Services (ETS)
and presented one of the successful candidate who with the help of ETS found an apprenticeship to help him in his career and how at the same time others are trained while attending courses to further their education.
Judy Flight from the Enfield Place Shaping and and Tony Wallis from the employment development management brought to everybody's attention the variety of services and the offices that are based at Edmonton Green who are providing help and guidance to those who may wish to find an employer for apprenticeships ,
Judy Flight said that they have good working relationship with the private sector and businesses who may be in a position to offer jobs and apprenticeships.
Those present did approach the officers and wanted more information and arrangements were made to see the officers at some stage in the future.
The seminars are Funded by Be Safe Feel Safe Stronger Safer Communities
and The Lottery Awards For All in coperation with Lefkara Association of Great Britain a local charity under the number 295494Cllr George Savva MBE said "I will like to thank everyone who have contributed towards the success fo thee seminars sponsored by Lottery Award For All, and Be Safe Feel safe Stronger Safer Communities Board. "I know it is not easy" he continued "to stage such seminars but it was mede easy as I have had to deal with very professional people who are masters in their field and are great team players accompanied with a spirit of cooperation and understanding "." George Savva
The Seminar on Drugs and Alcohol Abuse proved to be a great success.
The former substance users stood up and inform the gathering in detail of their fight to conquer the adiction when in fact at the end they have won, but they had to endure life living in squatter, a string of jail sentences span over 15 years and how they came forward to seek help.
They emphasised the reason they have won, is that they wanted to get out of this addiction as they did realise drugs were killing their internal organs.
They made a plea to all who are suffering from addiction either alcohol or illegal drugs misuse to seek help and to come forward as there are people who are trained to give them help and advice in a very confidential manner.
An initial phone call on 020 8379 5622 may be the most important call in saving someones life.
Lesley Johnson, and Faye gave an insight talk into a number of drugs
and what effect they have on the body and brain.
The event was well ateended and this was covered by no less than 2 television channels and numerous reporters from local and international papers.
George Savva said the demand should have never been there in the first place and if wqe all try toi eliminate the use of these illegal substances thrn perhaps those countries who smuggle illegal substances in thIis country will stop, if the demand was not there in the first place.

Blue plaque for missionary Gladys goes back on wall
Wednesday, 11 November 2009
Job done: Councillor George Savva with Gladys Aylward deputy head Paul Phillips
A NEW blue plaque commemorating a missionary made famous in a Hollywood film will replace the original which had been ripped down.
The original plaque, which commemorated Gladys Aylward, was taken down by tenants of a house in Cheddington Road, Edmonton, in April, causing outrage among other local residents.
Despite repeated appeals for it to be replaced, the landlady of the property has finally agreed that another plaque can take its place.
Haselbury ward councillor George Savva led the original protest and Gladys Aylward School, in Windmill Road, Edmonton, and the Enfield Society have agreed to share the bill for a new plaque at a cost of just under £ 700.
Mr Savva said: "After a long campaign I'm glad the owner has agreed to allow us to put the plaque back. The plaque is something that Edmonton should be proud of and we should look after these things because it's our heritage. "
Born into a working class family in 1902, Gladys grew up in Edmonton, but travelled to China in the 1930s to work as a missionary.
When the Japanese invaded in 1938 she helped evacuate nearly 100 children over the mountains. Her life was immortalised in the Ingrid Bergman film, The Inn Of The Sixth Happiness.
Paul Phillips, deputy headteacher at Gladys Aylward School, said: "We've a small legacy of artefacts from her life and times. We want to do more work with the community and she's a good role model. It's also good to show that Edmonton has a history. The owners have agreed to keep it there and let us know if there's any damage. "
